Cheers and Jeers [Jan. 28]

I tried in my mind to asianize the title somehow in celebration of the Chinese New Year, but too bad, there are enough R’s already.  What are we cheering and jeering about this week?  Click below the fold to see…

Cheers this week to sorority rush being over.  In the end, from peripheral experience and from ideological bent, I’ve decided that the whole process is by turns meaningless, harmful to girls’ self-esteem, and wholly damaging to the eardrums of all involved.  We here at Furman Underground do in no way endorse the rush process, and feel that everyone would be better off if the whole shebang got thrown out the window.  I mean, really?

Jeers to Al Gore.  Where’s my global warming, man?  All of this cold and no snow?  Sweden wants its nobel prize back.

Cheers to Great Britain’s choice of street names.  In what other country can we have streets named “East Breast” and “Penistone”?  And those are some of the tame ones.  Can you imagine having to spell out your address?

Cheers, also, to the Year of the Ox.  Why is this cool?  Well, we’re not exactly sure, but everyone’s favorite President was born in 1961, another Year of the Ox, so it can only mean good things. From the Wiki…

This powerful sign is a born leader, being quite dependable and possessing an innate ability to achieve great things. As one might guess, such people are dependable, calm, and modest. Like their animal namesake, the Ox is unswervingly patient, tireless in their work, and capable of enduring any amount of hardship without complaint.

Can’t say shit abut that.

Jeers to a new low in Music.  In days of yore, music and poetry would be woven together, the words as intricate and subtle as the music beneath it.  No longer.  Kelly Clarkson’s new #1 single, “My Life Would Suck Without You,” speaks for itself, followed closely by “Love Story” and “I Hate This Part”.  What the Fuck, America.  Will we ever have a time when popular music can be called Art again?

And, because I hate to end on a low note, Cheers to Puppies!

What are you cheering and jeering about this week?

I’m totally cheering about the NYT special section on Thursdays that’s all about au courante, high fashion.
